Acting as both training camp and laboratory, it is a diverse, multidisciplinary program where unexpected collisions and obsessive attention to detail expose a rich seam of creative potential. Media Studies presents an opportunity to develop individual practice, where students hone their dexterity with established and progressive media, actively testing modes of production through focused acts of doing and making.
SONIC GEOMETRY 1
Tues, 2-5pm, Room TBC
The course focuses on visualising sonic data from frequencies and field recordings to three dimensional spaces. We will work with 3d programs to propose audio visual compositions and notations which carry the dynamics and context of the collected sounds. This sonic arrangement will not be used only as a trigger but will accompany the final geometric visualisation by further strengthening our understanding and creating more depth in relation to a proposed space, place and the context within. When Johann Wolfgang von Goethe famously stated that "Architecture is frozen music" he also planted a seed for multidisciplinary practices, highlighting the cross over in creative thinking behind the different art disciplines. To follow the footsteps of Goethe, Itten, Kandinsky and others, we will continue to explore the shared space between music and architecture in three dimensions. The course will teach you creative use of the 3d software Rhinoceros by using it as design tool to create an animation combining sounds and spatial geometries. As a result of the engagement to the two different medias you will learn how to hesitate less when making compositional decisions as the intuition which is brought forward from the sonic experimentations will continue to guide you through the conceptual visualisations and notations.
Session 1: OSCILLATIONS

The course will start by sequencing intuitive frequencies and found sounds with assistance from a London based artist. We will create individual sound pieces for everyone which will form the basis of the experimentation.
Session 2: TRANSPOSITION I
Tuesday 10 Oct / 14 Nov
Experimenting with different ways to input the sound to a visual format in Rhinoceros by transposing the audio sequence and sonic data into a three dimensional model. We will also go through drawing methods and present research of visual precedents from musical and scientific notation.
Session 3: TRANSPOSITION II
Tuesday 17 Oct / 21 Nov
Building up the three dimensional model in Rhinoceros to become a visual notation of the sound piece, combining materiality, light, geometry and space.
Session 4: ARRANGEMENT
Tuesday 24 Oct / 28 Nov
In the Final session we will adjust the notation/spatial arrangement to sync with the audio and make an animation to show the relationship of the sound and the space together.
